Your guess is as good as ours. But rather than guessing about this intriguing niche of board design, we decided to ring up one of its most celebrated torchbearers, San Diego shaper Josh Hall.

Munoz - Ultra Glide

Clearly Hall is a more than capable student. For starters, the longer the board, the more Aloha you gotta have out in the lineup, right? The one thing the Big Board really allows you to do is cover ground.

My rule of thumb growing up riding Big Boards has always been to catch two or three waves, and then move on, so you never abuse a single lineup. And lastly, go with as forgiving of a shape as possible. For your first one start with an Eagle. For your second or third one, go with a swallow tail design, like the Fish Simmons. But they are also a more advanced design. All Big Boards have to have the right components. With my boards, the outlines are really straight, which leads to speed, but it makes them stiff.

So, you have to put a lot of bottom curve in there to be able to get them on a rail. The thing I would say for someone transitioning to their first Big Board and learning to control it, is to go to spots that are mellow, where you can ride a long distance. Even if it closes out you can still ride it and work on your trimming.

They are actually really versatile shapes. When people talk shit and say these boards are only for going straight and trimming, I always point them to that clip. I have a couple friends in Kauai riding them in foot surf. They ride my and footers over there because they can get in so early and it takes the elevator drop out of the equation. I grew up riding longboards so I never liked that sensation of a late drop on smaller boards. By signing up you agree to our Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy.

We spoke with him about one of his favorites: The Glider. What is a Glider? Gliders are what they are now called as a general term. He talks about the creation of the board and the ethos behind it.

How do you explain the current popularity of Gliders? Today, there are lot of guys building them so people are starting to see them more. Basically, I think people are just looking for different ways to enjoy their surfing. Why ride a Glider? The length of lines that you can draw on a nice section that runs. And you if you go parallel stance, you can just stand there and literally do nothing at all.

To me that is the ultimate in the trim and glide thing. What is the feeling that you get from riding a Glider? It could be a knee high wave, but if it is lined up right — it just turns me into a grom. Nobody can really see what is going on when someone is riding a Glider because it looks like you are not really doing anything.

What are some of the ingredients that go into a well-made Glider? Parallel rails are a key element and also having the right bottom contours. In addition, the board has to have the right amount of Vee. I do a single concave into a spiral vee. This provides lift. Rail contours are also real important.

Generally, they are softer up front and neutral in the middle, and down in the tail. The rails wrap the energy of the wave - whether it is knee high, chest high, or overhead — it will pull you along. What about tail shapes? The iconic tail shape by Skip is the Fish Simmons. That is what I first got turned onto. For most people it might be The Eagle, which is patterned after a rounded pin outline. Basically, it is either pintails or swallowtails.

And depending on the models, the tail width will change. The Fish Simmons is probably the most difficult board to learn how to ride well.

The Eagle style with rounded pin is more forgiving. Both style boards can only work with a lot of Vee. The Vee gives you rail rocker which helps you get all that rail out of the water and turn What about fin setups? They just feel so good going through the water. With the straight rails and having so much line, the quads make a lot of sense.

With tri fins, you have that center fin drag. But with a quad, you basically break the center fin out and place it on the rails.A big board specifically designed for Speed, Trim and Glide. A narrow outline, with low gentle rocker and smooth continuous bottom contours.

The rails flow from upturned in the nose transitioning to a hard edge in the tail allowing control in steeper waves and the pocket. The length will allow you to pick up and plane on even the smallest amount of wave energy.

Ideally ridden in smaller ft surf taking fast highlines in steeper surf. There is no reason why this board will not ride bigger waves though. Being inspired from a gun it will pick up head high rollers with ease although you need to know what you are doing.

I designed this model after doing some research on an old Dick Brewer Pipeliner gun As shown in photos although designed for bigger waves it also looked like a small wave trimming machine, especially being built in the days before big rockers where used. Everything has been tuned so that minimal effort will produce a lot of speed and glide. With such a huge amount of rail locked into the wave this board will feel like nothing else.

This board is a must for any longboarders quiver. Approximately 25 hours of handcrafted work has gone into making this board. Your email address will not be published.
